Telehealth Policy Updates for Medicare Effective April 1

Published: 03.25.2025

Medicare telehealth flexibilities that have been in place since the COVID-19 pandemic are set to expire on March 31, 2025.
Individuals enrolled in Medicare can still receive telehealth services at any location in the U.S., including their home, through March 31, 2025.

Changes Starting April 1, 2025
Starting April 1, 2025, patients must be in an office or medical facility located in a rural area (in the U.S.) for most telehealth services. If they are not in a rural health care setting, they can still get certain Medicare telehealth services on or after April 1, including:
  • Monthly End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) visits for home dialysis
  • Services for diagnosis, evaluation, or treatment of symptoms of an acute stroke wherever you are, including in a mobile stroke unit
  • Services for the diagnosis, evaluation, or treatment of a mental and/or behavioral health disorder (including a substance use disorder) in your home
